BRUSSELS (AP) — European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso says he will confront Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Friday over a contentious media law that has raised EU concerns over press freedom.

Barroso said Wednesday he will seek "clarification of the situation and, if possible, a lifting of the doubts" that have hung over the media law, which took effect on Saturday.

It greatly expands the state’s power to monitor and penalize private news outlets, and several European countries have criticized it.

The EU has not yet taken any legal action against the law.

The whole EU Commission, which runs the EU’s day-to-day affairs, will meet with the government in Budapest on Friday as part of the start of Hungary’s six-month presidency of the EU.
