You're reading: European Commission still cool to South Stream

Brussels - The planned South Stream gas pipeline must fully comply with European law, a source in the European Commission told journalists in Brussels on Tuesday, March 19.

“We have clearly stated our position on this issue, officially and at meetings with our Russian partners. South Stream is not a priority project for us, because it does nothing to diversify the EU’s energy supply,” the source said.

Speaking ahead of talks between the Russian government and the European Commission in Moscow on March 21-22, the source said: “We don’t have anything against the project itself, which must still be analyzed, but like any project or initiative in the EU, it must comply with European legislation.”

“There will be no special exclusions for this project. It must fully comply with our laws. We are ready to analyze the project plan to determine whether it does so,” the source said.
