You're reading: Final report on Malaysian Boeing crash to be published next summer

The final report on the causes of the crash of the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 airliner in Donetsk region on July 17 could be published in the summer of 2015, Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans has said. 

“According to the preliminary report, although additional investigation at the crash site is preferable, it is possible to conduct an effective investigation based on other available sources, and to prepare a final report. It is expected to be published in the summer of next year,” he said at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday.

Timmermans said that the Netherlands planned to bring those responsible for the tragedy to justice.

“The prosecutor of the Netherlands began a large-scale criminal investigation, the biggest in the history of the Netherlands. Our government has been informed by the prosecutor’s service that this is a complex investigation, but progress has been made,” he said.

According to Timmermans, 225 of the 298 plane crash victims have currently been identified, and experts from 11 countries are working on this.

“Most of the human remains have been collected, but we must make sure that all remains and personal belongings be repatriated,” he said.

The Malaysia Airlines’ Boeing 777, which was flying from Amsterdam (the Netherlands) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), crashed in eastern Ukraine on July 17. All 298 people on board were killed. They included 192 Dutch citizens (one also had U.S. citizenship), 44 Malaysians, including the 15 crew members, 27 Australians, 12 Indonesians, ten Britons (one also had South African nationality), four Germans, four Belgians, three Filipinos, one Canadian and one New Zealander.

The Dutch Safety Board published a preliminary report on an investigation into the MH17 crash on September 9, which says that the plane was technically sound and broke up in the air probably as a result of structural damage caused by a large number of objects that penetrated the aircraft from outside….
