You're reading: Foreign Ministry: No Ukrainians among victims of earthquake in Italy

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has said that there are no Ukrainian citizens among those killed and injured in the recent earthquake in Italy.

"According to the additional information of Ukraine’s consulate general in Milan, the local authorities are completing a search and rescue operation in the Emilia-Romagna region (northern Italy) in response to the earthquake that occurred on May 29," Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleksandr Dykusarov told Interfax-Ukraine.

He noted that according to preliminary data, 17 people were killed and nearly 300 injured in the earthquake, while over 16,000 people were injured when their homes collapsed.

"According to the consulate, there are no Ukrainian citizens among those killed or injured in the disaster there," Dykusarov said.

On Tuesday, Italy’s northern regions underwent a series of aftershocks from 5 to 5.8 on the Richter scale. The epicenters of aftershocks were located in the Emilia-Romagna region – the triangle between the cities of Modena, Ferrara and Bologna.
