You're reading: New York Times: Chinese newspaper apologizes for articles by detained reporter

 Days after it used its front page to campaign for the release of a detained reporter, a Chinese newspaper has again taken to its front page, this time to admit that the reporter had been paid off to write a series attacking a prominent company. “To all walks of society we hereby express our profound apology,” The New Express, a tabloid based in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, said Sunday in a notice at the bottom of its front page.

On Saturday, the New Express reporter, Chen Yongzhou, 27, was shown on national television admitting that he had accepted money to pass off articles submitted from an outside source that attacked the business practices of China’s second-largest heavy equipment maker, Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Company.
