LONDON - Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled to intercept Russian military 'Bear' bombers for the second time in a week, it has emerged, the British Sky News TV channel reported on Saturday.

The Typhoons were sent up from RAF Lossiemouth on Friday to escort the aircraft just two days after UK jets intercepted another Russian bomber over UK skies, reads the report.

It comes amid what NATO described as an ‘unusual’ increase in activity from Russian military jets over European airspace.

NATO earlier informed that NATO aircraft tracked Russian strategic bombers over the Atlantic and Black Sea and sorties of fighters over the Baltic on October 28 and October 29 in what the Western alliance called an unusual burst of activity at a tense time in East-West relations.

Two Tupolev Tu-95 strategic bombers Portugal were identified in the international air space along the coast of Portugal.
