Ukrainians choose their president
Feb 8, 2010 at 15:14
After a tense two week election campaign between the first and the second round of voting, Ukrainians elected their president on Feb.7. Victor Yanukovych received 48.5 percent of votes, while his rival Yulia Tymoshenko got 45.9 percent of the votes by the time the Central Election Commission counted nearly 98 percent of the ballots on Feb. 8. Supporters of Yanukovych have camped outside the CEC since the end of last week, but no clashes or conflicts were reported.
Domestic election watchdog, the Committee of Voters of Ukraine, said on Feb. 8 that despite the tense campaign between the first and the second round of voting, the election was clean and there were no systemic falsifications that would justify attempts to challenge election results.
