Stalker game comes alive in Kyiv
Aug 24, 2010 at 16:14
World-famous computer game Stalker came to life on Aug. 21 as 120 Ukrainians aged 18-45 gathered to recreate the electronic adventures in reality. The village of Bykovnya in Kyiv region was partially turned into the Zone of Alienation, around which the game is designed. The Zone is located around Chornobyl nuclear power plant, whose fourth reactor exploded in 1986 during the largest nuclear disaster in history. The radiation that was spewed at the time still affects the lives of many people in Ukraine and beyond.
According to the plot of the computer game Stalker, the nuclear explosion made a vast impact on the nearby area, producing monsters humans have to fight. The ultimate battle between the monsters and humans in gas masks and military attire took place in Bykovnya for the third time this year. Its organizers are currently negotiating the Chornobyl Zone’s administrators to be able to hold one of the game in the actual zone. The idea for the plot of the game came from the popular science fiction book Roadside Picnic by Boris and Arkady Strugatsy, which came out in 1972. The book was screened by Andrei Tarkovsky in 1979. His movie was also called Stalker.
