You're reading: Ukrainian women strike a pose with their idols

Apart from having their own day in the calendar, women now have an exhibition of their own.

Kyiv photographer Igor Gaidai presented a special exhibit on March 6 dedicated to famous Ukrainian women and historical female characters who inspired them.

Ten successful and famous women are portrayed holding pictures of the likes of Princess Diana and Coco Chanel.

Gaidai confessed that he first thought of taking pictures of the modern women in the image of their idols, but eventually changed his mind.

“I mean, aren’t those women successful and beautiful enough to be glorified themslves, not in the image of someone else?” asks Gaidai, who specializes in portraits.

Women who took part in Gaidai’s photo project included writer Lada Luzina, singer Natalya Mohylevska, ex-model Vlada Prokayeva, and other art and show business stars. All of them were free to choose any female character to be photographed with.

According to Gaidai, several participants immediately claimed their choice, others took their time to think.

“Some of the women here didn’t open up for the camera, and some did,” Gaidai says about his pictures.

One of those who, according to Gaidai, opened up, was Margarita Sichkar, a restaurant owner. She was photographed with Leni Riefenstahl, a German film director, known as controversial figure due to her friendship with Adolf Hitler.

Sichkar says she’s a big fan of Riefenstahl. A copy of her portrait from exhibition, holding Riefenstahl’s picture, will be hanged in her office near a collage made of Riefenstahl’s photos.

The exhibition will run on the third floor of Sky Mall shopping center on 2T Generala Vatutina, through March 18.
