You're reading: Shine your pagan side

One of the most popular pagan holidays, Ivana Kupala, will be celebrated this weekend in Kyivska Rus park, a medieval theme park in Kyiv region.

It was traditionally celebrated in July when the sun was at the peak of its power, and was a form of worship to Dazhbog, the pagan sun god in this part of the world.

There is a wonderful popular myth in Ukraine associated with this holiday that the eve of Ivana Kupala is the only night when ferns bloom. Of course, it’s not true because ferns belong to the Pteridophyta group of plants that produce spores rather than flowers and seeds. But it has never stopped the enthusiastic Ukrainian youth from going to the woods for the whole night to look for that romantic blossom. It was also believed to bring riches and power.

This is just one of many traditions associated with Ivana Kupala, and many of them will be re-enacted in Kyivska Rus.You will be able to make a traditional flower wreath, learn about Slavic calligraphy and many other things.  Apart from that, you will also have chance to jump over fire, witness the burning of a scarecrow and other traditional rituals.
