Europe’s top soccer governing body said it received a record of more than 12 million ticket applications from 206 countries for next year’s Euro 2012 soccer championship being co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland.

With the month-long ticket application process ending on March 31, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) said it received 17 percent more applications than for the Euro 2008 tournament, its highest ever.

A lottery for the 574,000 tickets being made available to the general public will take place on April 19 thru April 22.

It will be monitored by an international audit.

UEFA said ticket lottery winners will receive e-mailed notifications by the end of April.

Applications from co-hosts Ukraine and Poland made up the largest share of applicants – 88 percent. Germany was next with 2.82 percent, Russia with 1.16 percent and Switzerland with 1 percent.

This is the first UEFA Euro soccer championship being held in Eastern Europe.
