The motto of the Indie Movie Festival this year is “Indie Movie for Indie People.” The selected films were nominated in various prestigious festivals all over the world. The program includes screenings of documentary movies and fictional works. The festival opens up a separate workshop branch – an “Indie Lab” – where participants will be able to learn more about the screening process and the film industry, talk to directors, and create their own works.  The movies are shown in English with Ukrainian subtitles.

Midnight in Paris

Midnight in Paris

Don’t miss the screening of “Midnight in Paris,” the terrific 2011Woody Allen movie. The storyline introduces Gil, a screenwriter who accidentally travels back in time and finds comfort in the Parisian days of old.  The movie won Best Original Screenplay at the 84th Academy Awards, and was nominated for best picture, best director, and best motion picture at the Golden Globe Awards. The screening will be in English followed by a discussion.

Celebrating Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th birthday an eponymous chamber orchestra is coming to Kyiv with a great show. The itinerary includes Verdi’s most famous creations, works of Vivaldi and pieces by other Italian composers. The Chamber Orchestra of Giuseppe Verdi was founded in 1961 and is led by Fabrizio Ficiur.  Ficiur is well-known for his warm feeling towards baroque, hence the program the orchestra has planned for its performance in Kyiv titled “Baroque Christmas.”

Mystetskiy Arsenal invites everyone to their annual Christmas Fair. There, one can take part in a various Christmas games, enjoy creative master classes, stroll through a true Winter Wonderland decor and get holiday presents from the Kyiv’s leading handmade designers. The performances will be provided by Kyiv Children Choir Shchedryk and the winner of Ukraine’s version of So You Think You Can Dance Vasyl Kozar.

Duende Flamenco, the self-described Spanish theater and dance group, is one Flamenco group worth seeing. Founded in Kyiv their performances often tell evocative stories through acting, dancing and music. The show that the theater will present on Dec. 22 is called “Carretera,”or The Road.

Jazz Lounge Festival

Jazz Lounge Festival

The J&L Festival combines two different musical genres into one: jazz and electronic music. The festival will go on each Saturday over the next five weeks. Notably, on Dec. 14, the popular disc jockey Artemiy Trotskiy is set to perform. The program from Dec. 21 will include a performance by Kyiv composer Serhiy Grimalskiy.
