You're reading: Surviving winter cold with Honey

It's difficult for a random passer-by to miss an elegant yet bright yellow-colored door at Nyzhniy Val Street in Podil neighborhood. It looks like an entrance to a doll’s house but actually leads to a confectionery called Honey.

It opened this summer, and its laconic interior is dominated by bright yellow, dark chocolate and cream colors. The big windows and freshly-cut flowers on tables remind of a relaxed atmosphere of Paris cafes. Finding a free table here can be hard, but it’s worth trying.

The space here is divided into two zones. The main part of the hall has tables with couches and soft chairs meant for a longer rest. In the smaller zone there are tiny tables meant for those in a rush to quickly have their coffee and dessert or just wait for a take-away order.

When I first got to the Honey and saw their variety of biscuits, éclairs, muffins, sponge cakes and tarts, I felt somewhat confused because I am not an advanced connoisseur of sweets. Yet the friendly waiters seem to know their product well. They can describe in details the taste of each treat and list its ingredients. From the experience of my several visits to Honey I can say that it often takes more time for the customer to decide on the order than for the waiters to serve it.

Having tried most of Honey’s treats by now, I must say that the pumpkin cake (Hr 52) is the chef’s real masterpiece. Apparently, I’m not the only one thinking so. It is one of the most popular cakes on the menu, so a couple of times I was disappointed to find out that the cafe was out of it.

My second best choice is their fruity cakes. The berry cake (Hr 45) is worth trying. It is not too sweet, and is a good choice for those who prefer a fresh edge to their desserts. Vanilla panna cotta, on the opposite, is very sweet and goes well with the café’s buckthorn and orange tea.

The Honey has mid-range prices. Macaroons go for Hr 12 a piece, éclairs cost Hr 25 and chocolate cake is Hr 55.

For a drink to go with the dessert, the Honey offers tasty buckthorn tea (Hr 32), Espresso coffee (Hr 18), Americano coffee (Hr 18), smoothies (Hr 30), cacao (Hr 30) and lemonades (Hr 27).

Although the Honey is mainly known for its sweets, for those who like to have something savory before their sweet, the place also offers soups, meat courses and salads.
