You're reading: Briton Joss Stone gives Ukrainian folk song a new sound

Joss Stone sounds a little different in one of her latest videos.

The British singer usually performs soul and R&B, but she recently posted a YouTube video of her singing “Oh Beyond the Green Grove” (“Oy Za Hayem Zelenenkim”) – in Ukrainian.

The video was recorded at the Dovzhenko Center in Kyiv. Stone, who performed in Kyiv in October, was accompanied by the Ukrainian band Dvoe. Stone’s singing was backed up by keyboard, bass guitar and electronic drums, with the traditional song being set to an up-tempo garage beat.

“We all had a lot of enjoyment doing this song together with lots of giggles and laughter,” Stone said.

Joscelyn Eve Stoker, better known by her stage name Joss Stone, was born in Dover, UK and rose to fame in late 2003 with her multi-platinum debut album “The Soul Sessions.” Since then, Stone has won numerous awards and distinctions, including two Brit Awards and one Grammy Award.

At her Oct. 20 show at the Freedom Hall in Kyiv, Stone sang her old hits and introduced to the Kyiv audience songs from her new album “Water for Soul.”

“There was lots of good vibes going on and smiley, happy people… Ukraine you are something else,” Stone wrote in a Facebook post on Oct. 26.

During her trip to Ukraine the singer also visited the Home of Happy Children (Misto Ditey) charity, which offers shelter to children abandoned by their parents.

“It was a wonderful experience to meet the people that make this orphanage run in such a positive way,” Stone wrote on Oct. 27.
