The celebration of International Children’s Day in Donetsk on June 1 took on a political dimension when it turned out that candies delivered in the city’s central square were produced by President-elect Petro Poroshenko’s Roshen company.
Donetsk is a hotbed of separatist sentiment in Ukraine’s eastern regions. Several dozen citizens opposed to the government tore the boxes and trampled the candies, shouting “Poroshenko is a fascist.”
