Central bank governor Valeriya Hontareva tried demonstrating that U.S. dollars are – or should be – available for purchase in Ukrainian banks.
But when she visited a bank with a bunch of journalists on Oct. 6, an employee refused to sell dollars to her. After the NBU forced banks to drop the exchange rate to Hr 12.9 per dollar in late September, buying dollars in banks became a tough task.
