After Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov was murdered within steps of the Kremlin on Feb. 27, suspicion quickly fell on President Vladimir Putin, who Nemtsov has heavily criticized for years.

Putin’s spokesman said Nemtsov was no threat to the Russian government and “just a little bit more than an average citizen.” The day after the statement, on March 1, at least 50,000 people came to a memorial march for Nemtsov in Moscow.
