President Petro Poroshenko and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko used to be allies, but had a major disagreement over Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, fired as head of the Security Service of Ukraine on June 18.

Poroshenko demanded the dismissal after Nalyvaychenko accused former top employees of the Prosecutor General’s Office of corruption, while Klitschko took Nalyvaichenko‘s side. The temporary alliance of Klitschko and Poroshenko is believed to have been sealed by energy mogul Dmytro Firtash. They met with Firtash in Vienna, where he successfully fought U.S. extradition on criminal rackeeteering charges.

Firtash claimed to be the political kingmaker, deciding that Poroshenko would run for president and that Klitschko would drop his presidential bid and become Kyiv mayor. Poroshenko denies that any such agreement was reached with Firtash during the meeting. Firtash also denies the criminal accusations of bribery lodged against him.
