The town, which has been at forefront of an anti-Kyiv rebellion, has been held by insurgents for more than a month and is sealed off from army units. Authorities in the Ukrainian capital have held roundtable talks to try to defuse the crisis however the separatists themselves, who have declared the region a “people’s republic” have not taken part in the meetings.

While self-proclaimed independent regions in eastern Ukraine appear outside of the political dialogue, Ukrainian troops continue the anti-terrorist operation in the area.
