In the latest crackdown on the Crimean Tatars Russian security forces have raided the Mejlis, the Crimean Tatar assembly. Witnesses at the scene reported that several armed and masked men surrounded the building and did not let anyone enter or leave.

The Mejlis is located in Simferopol, the Crimean capital city. The Black Sea Peninsula was invaded by Russia in March and subsequently annexed by the Kremlin. The Mejlis serves as the self-governing body for the Crimean Tatars. Earlier this month the building was vandalised by obscene graffiti. Tatar leaders said the act was another provocation against their community meant to further intimidate the minority group.
