Poll: 58 percent of Ukrainians against NATO membership
Nearly 58 percent of Ukrainians would vote against a referendum on Ukraine’s accession to NATO, according to a FOM-Ukraine, public opinion poll released Sept. 30.

Meanwhile, 23.6 percent of those polled would vote for  alliance  membership, about 6 percent would not take part in a referendum, and 13 percent  found it difficult to say.

People were also asked if they approved of a NATO referendum taking place.

54 percent said yes, 31.9 percent said no, and about 14 percent  were undecided.

The poll was conducted among 2,000 respondents over 18 years of age, throughout the nations between Sept. 12 and Sept. 26. The sampling error was 2.2 percent.

FOM-Ukraine is Russian-Ukrainian joint venture and is known to be Kremlin friendly.

These numbers should not provide much comfort to Russia or Ukraine\'s communists. Despite Russia\'s threat to target nuclear missiles at Ukraine; and despite its threat to engage in various forms of economic and political retaliation and sanctions; and despite the almost unceasing barrage of anti-NATO propaganda from Russia, 4 out of every 10 Ukrainians either opted for NATO or expressed no opinion on the issue.

If and when Ukraine\'s pro-NATO advocates (including the Yushchenko government) get their act together and begin an effective informational campaign to counter leftist and Russian fear-mongering and disinformation, these numbers can be readily reversed.

Ukrainians are, after all, a very sensible and pragmatic people. Other than Russian paranoia, there are no good arguments against NATO membership.
