Yekhanurov: Ukraine may join NATO without acceding to Membership Action Plan

Yekhanurov: Ukraine may join NATO without acceding to Membership Action Plan
Defense Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov considers as possible Ukraine's accession to NATO without joining the action plan on the membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

He expressed this opinion in the November 28 interview for the 5 Channel television company.

"The NATO Membership Action Plan has been a bit diabolized, though it is a kind of a test. I think that the main issue is to make the state satisfy the requirements of the European Union for instance, and the requirements set by the NATO member states," the Minister said.

Yekhanurov also expressed the opinion that it is vital for Ukraine's accession to NATO to make sure that its army occupies its niche in this structure.

"It is essential that we become an important part, an integral part there, and occupy our own niche in the organization to perform our tasks," he said.

Yekhanurov noted that it is important to bring Ukraine in compliance with the NATO standards both in political ad economic dimensions.

He also emphasized that approval of the population is a factor of vast importance for Ukraine's accession to NATO as well.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, United States Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor is recommending that Ukraine abandon joining the NATO Membership Action Plan and seek other ways of getting closer to the Alliance.

The participants in the NATO summit that took place in Bucharest on April 3 decided to postpone consideration of the issue of inviting Ukraine to join the NATO Membership Action Plan until December.

Of all the nations of Earth, Poland, Ukraine, and the Baltic states are the best historically and geographically placed nations to best keep a watchful and diplomatic eye on Moscow. Ukraine and Poland and the Baltic nations know Moscow very well. NATO and the EU are the backers, in complete agreement or not, of this historic and diplomatic accord - however it is written. It is good to remember many Eastern European nations, currently in NATO and the EU, are still fighting for their national survival from Moscow rule and corruption.

Latvia todays problem du to Russia, eh? Come on. Stop this paranoia. It is home made economic fuck up.

Talking about democracy, they put now economists in prison in Latvia. This because they give advice to the population on how to survive this crisis.

The nations you mention are like bitter divorced women. Yes, they know their ex husband very well, and will do all they can to spray poison.

Turkey doesn\'t quite fit in anywhere. As a muslim country, Europe does not feel comfortable with Turkey joining the EU, but as a secular nation, Turkey doesn\'t fit in with it\'s religious extremist neighbors. Ukraine doesn\'t carry this baggage, and should have no problem being accepted into the EU.

Turkey is muslim and in Ukraine they have stupid leaders. This is worse than a stable muslim country. This is why Turkey is member of NATO and Ukraine is still on the boarwalk.

II am a US citizen who travels to Ukraine regularly. I love Ukraine and Ukrainian people. I do not believe that joining NATO in any form is beneficial to Ukraine. Without the US, NATO is a dead horse; and with a new US administration, I hope the focus is on diplomacy rather than \"consumerism and emperialization\". The NATO carrot is being dangled in front of the noses of Ukrainians with promises of European Union status. Ukraine has a rightful place amongst the EU; but the price of NATO is too dear to consider. Ukraine is strong and resourceful - do not let the cost of NATO; outside terrorism, sour Russian relations and US military colonization be the price of capitulation to corporate-facism.

You are quite correct, EU and NATO are entirely different organisations. But some countries seem to think that joining NATO will lead to certain membership of EU. They should look at Turkey. It is estimated thar it will be 10-15 years before Turkey will become am member of EU, if then, if the current attitude to Turkish membership by the French population and the population of some other EU countries does not change Turkey will never be a member. With Bulgaria and Rumania being accepted into EU there is no justification for delaying membership of Ukraine to EU

Ukraine is not mature enough to join. And what will Ukraine bring to Europe? Contribution? Europe is still trying to digest the new 12 member states. Constitution rejected because of that. Reckless foreign policy concepts of Poland etc etc.

Ukraine should first try to clean up its act alone. Impossible? Switzerland? Norway?
