Putin: Ukrainians 'don't want to pay' gas debt
Moscow, December 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Russia and Ukraine has failed to come to agreement on the problem of debt payments for Russian gas, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told reporters in Moscow on Monday.

"I have just talked with Viktor Andreyevych [Yuschenko] for almost an hour - so far no agreement has been reached," Putin said.

Asked to explain why, Putin said, "They don't want to pay."

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Vesti-24 news channel that the mechanism of early warning on possible restrictions for gas supplies should cover transit countries including Ukraine,

"The European Union has asked us to create a mechanism of early warning [in case of possible gas supply restrictions] . We have told our colleagues in Brussels for several years that this mechanism should include transit countries but we have not noticed that the EU has conducted such work with Ukraine," Lavrov said.

Russia has been making every effort, he said. "Besides the fact that we have honestly informed [EU] on the talks [with Ukraine], even a year ago Russia set apart the contracts for gas supply to Ukraine and those for gas transit to Europe," he said.

"It is possible to imagine that currently the European countries cannot make some statements reflecting their understanding of the Russian position for political reasons, but this understanding is in place in the conversations conducted between the Europeans and Moscow," he said.

Also on Monday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met with Verkhovna Rada Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn on Monday, the Kremlin said.

"They discussed the current situation in the Russian-Ukrainian relations," it said.

"The Russian president said he was concerned over the weakening dynamics of Russian-Ukrainian relations as well as with a range of problems including payments for Russian gas supplies," it said.

"Medvedev said he hoped the situation would improve next year," it said

Hryhoriy Nemyria, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister told the Financial Times that Ms Tymoshenko had suggested to Mr Barroso that the EU immediately send a team of technical experts to monitor Ukraine’s gas pipeline system, including gas metering stations, in order to refute claims by Gazprom that the Ukraine had stolen gas or itself cut off supplies for Europe.

”This proposition was supported by the EU side and shows the openness of Ukraine. We have nothing to hide. We want them to clearly see the facts of what is happening,” Mr Nemyria said.

Gazprom for its part said it had raised supplies to the EU and Turkey via alternative routes through Belarus and across the Black Sea to Turkey although this was still not enough to cover the shortfall from Ukrainian routes. (Financial Times)

Why the hell Ukraine cannot pay this debt? Well, the answer is clear: In Ukraine, nobody pays the market prize of the gaz delivered from Russia.

Mr. Putin: Please help us in Ukraine we are having a very difficult time with the global financial crises. There is a lot of aid coming to Ukraine from Europe and North America do you think that maybe Russia can send some aid to its poor brothers to the south?

We are really struggling and hope you find it in your heart of hearts to lend us a hand. I know this will go a long way to healing relations between both countries. We are waiting.

wake up brother! Between countries, there is no compassion or some humanity. but only benefits.Do you think countries who allowed credit and some loan-vaiwing ability (so called \"help\" ) they done it for the name of charity? of course no! They gave \"one\" and will take it back as \"hundred\" when time comes. It is not a fairy tale but real world.
