Putin: Russia to start cutting gas exports through Ukraine by amount that Kyiv diverts

5 January, 18:28 | Interfax-Ukraine
Novo-Ogaryovo, January 5 (Interfax) - Starting from Monday, Russia will begin reducing gas exports to Western Europe through the Russian-Ukrainian border by 65.3 million cubic meters of gas, an amount already diverted by Ukraine, said Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin

Gazprom Chairman Alexei Miller informed Putin at a Monday meeting about the amount of gas Ukraine had diverted from the export pipeline running to Western Europe.

When Putin asked Miller what Gazprom planned to do in response to this, Miller said, "There is a proposal that the amount [of gas] supplied to the Russian-Ukrainian border be reduced by the amount that has already been stolen, which is 65.3 million cubic meters, and then the export supplies should be reduced each day by an amount that may be stolen this day," he said.

"Okay, I agree. Start such reductions today. And also inform our European partners and the European Commission about the situation," Putin said addressing Miller.

Putin gave approval for Gazprom to reduce the amount of gas going down the Ukraine pipe line by 65.3B cubic meters.
This is the amount that Gazprom accuses Ukraine of siphoning off on route to West Europe
Countries suffering a drop in gas will put pressure on Ukraine to settle this dispute quicker and honour its transit contract with Gazprom, for gas from Russia to West Europe.
