Yushchenko: Purpose of gas conflict is to convince Europe of need to develop Nord Stream pipeline
Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko has claimed the purpose of the gas conflict between Ukraine and Russia might be to convince European consumers of Russian gas of the need to develop the Nord Stream gas pipeline, and solve the problem of the ownership of the Ukrainian gas transportation system.

"The European community has become a hostage to [the relations of Russia and Ukraine in the gas sphere]. I do not exclude that one of the reasons for this campaign was the intention to activate the unpromising project of the Nord Stream gas pipeline and show that the current system needs an alternative," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday.

Friends,

Let me suggest that this whole thing might well conclude in war. There might be a situation where the Russian armed forces will invade Ukraine in order to \\\'protect\\\' the pipelines. They might just station themselves around all the strategic places around the pipelines in order to control them. This might be where this whole situation is leading to.

So he actually confirms, that the whole incident was a deliberate provocation to sway EU customers towards the acceptance of NordStream? Unbelievable!

He left hudreds of thousands of the Europeans out in cold - only to prove his point and demonstrate his hate towards Russia! iIn\' t it crime and he has to be persecuted?

Moscovy Russia is blaming the United States now for influencing Ukraine. Rassia with zero credibility doing business Mafia Diplomacy . Ask the oil companies like Shell or Exxon how things are going with their investments in Sakhalin. Moscow is a pest hole where Jailing, assassination or just friendly poisoning by one of the Clans is normal. Journalists are mugged or killed faster than can be reported. Your business can deal in Rassiya famous court system? How would you like a nice Internet attack?

The Northern pipeline is essential for the security of Europe\'s gas supply. if anything this dispute has demonstrated that Ukraine is not a reliable or safe transit route.

No European affected by the current dispute between Russia & Europe will continue to perceive that dependency on Russian sourced energy is anything but madness.

Nord Stream - Let the pipeline rust.

Nothing but madness will convince Europe that they have any viable alternative to Russian gas. It is in the neighborhood and Russia is eager to sell its vast resources. This is the cheapest and best route for European energy security. Not to mention that Russia has the need for German industrial goods, and Russia\'s rail network is the gateway to Asia and the far east. For those pushing Nabucco, sober up. Nabucco is NOT A PIPELINE, it is a PIPEDREAM. It is based on the lunacy of Zbignew Brzezinski\'s supporters that claim that the control of Central Asia means the control of the world. Now, if Europeans are going to bet their future on such lunacy, good luck to you! As of now there are NO GAS SUPPLIES being available to the mythical Nabucco. Somebody without conscience and problems with using force can go on Iran and Turkmenistan, and steal the gas that has been committed to others, including Russia for decades to come. So, Europe, get ready and pay for another war.

\"This is the cheapest and best route for European energy security.\"

Cheap is seldom the best, as eastern Europeans have painfully found out.

You are right - we in EU are about to freeze and gas is not coming. In few years we will learn to live without your pipeline. It is useless now. We prefer to have reliable to cheap.

No, Mr. President. The current conflict is about unseating you and giving Ukrainians hope for a better life that they deserve.

Don\'t take my word for it. Resign, and see for yourself how it will happen.

I fully agree the sooner Yushchenko resigns the better off Ukraine and the world will be.,
Guest    (Guest) | 13.01.2009, 18:58
i rather think yushchenko is doing a pretty good job himself garnering support for the nordstream project....muppet.
Guest    (Guest) | 13.01.2009, 18:53
Once again the president is strangely confused as to what is happening outside of UA. Where did he get the idea that Nord Stream was deactivated to begin with. It\'s not just Russia who is building that project and except for some disagreements on the underwater route, the project is very much alive. It will be done one way of the other nomatter what in the next three year, there are way too many foreign parties who are interested in seeing it done.

This is for internal Ukrainian consumption surely
