Few parts of America have been as badly hit by the global economic crisis as California, where Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has been forced to slash state budgets to compensate for a $24 billion shortfall. Among the items on the chopping block were 100 California state parks -- including Fort Ross, a 19th-century settlement on the Pacific coast just north of San Francisco that was established by a group of hunters and traders from Russia.

New Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat has asked the European Union to offer Moldovans "a clear perspective for joining the EU," RFE/RL's Moldovan Service reports. Filat told the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee in Brussels that his country needs EU economic help to overcome its current economic crisis and to implement market-oriented reforms.

Ratification of the treaty by all 27 members -- required under existing EU legislation -- would streamline Brussels decision-making and raise EU hopes of greater global clout, according to its backers. The turnaround comes just 15 months after the same Irish voters rejected the Lisbon Treaty in June 2008.

Earlier news agencies reported that under the rubble of the Prague, Czech Republic, building in reconstruction there were possibly four workers from Eastern Europe. According to witnesses, the construction workers were from Bulgaria and Ukraine. The rescue operation is impeded by immanent danger of further collapse of the building.
