Europolitics: Moscow pledges no gas cuts to European Union this winter Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has promised that Moscow will not cut off its gas deliveries to Europe this winter, as it did in January 2009, in spite of recurring tension with Ukraine over transit arrangements. “We guarantee that our contractual obligations will be respected. The agency said the cost would have been much higher, at 672 million hryvnias ($84 million), if the election had been held in October, as earlier planned.

Ukrainian steel producer ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih, a unit of the world's largest steelmaker, ArcelorMittal, said Monday its steel output is stabilizing after importing more coking coal to offset supply shortages in Ukraine. "Ukraine is facing a shortage in coking coal supply, which seems to be expected for the coming year. In front of this situation and in order to prevent any interruption in the operation, ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih has...imported coal from CIS and North America," company said.

Ukraine's parliament will gather for a session on Tuesday to hear into allegations of children's sexual abuse at the country's Black Sea coast holiday camp. The Artek camp in the Crimea has been the focus of Ukrainian media reports since October 13, when a lawmaker from Ukraine's political opposition party said two siblings had been raped at the camp and that top officials were involved in the abuse.

A presidential election campaign has kicked off in Ukraine. This is the first contest since Victor Yushchenko swept into power in 2004. Leading the most recent opinion polls are Victor Yanukovych, the incumbent leader's 2004 rival, and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Analysts, believe the two top contenders will go into a runoff vote. According to a latest survey, Yanukovych is ahead with almost 27 percent of the ballots, while Tymoshenko sits at about 15 percent.
