German trial over stabbing death of Muslim woman BERLIN — The trial of a man accused of stabbing a pregnant Egyptian woman to death in a German court — an attack that outraged Muslims — opens Monday in the same courthouse, but under much greater security.

Some 200 police officers are to secure the Dresden state court, and bulletproof glass has been installed in the courtroom where the alleged assailant, identified only as Alexander W., goes on trial accused of murder, attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm.

Jailed Russian tycoon marks 6 years in prison MOSCOW — Russia's most famous prisoner, former billionaire oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, is marking the six anniversary of his arrest with little hope for clemency from the Kremlin.

Khodorkovsky, once Russia's richest man, is serving an eight-year sentence on fraud and tax evasion charges. He said that the authorities apparently expected him to acknowledge guilt in order to receive a pardon — something he has no intention of doing.

The International Monetary Fund warned Ukraine on Sunday that the financial institution might freeze assistance ahead of a hotly contested presidential election if populist wage and pension increases are introduced.

The warning comes as fears grow that Kiev could sink deeper into political turmoil, following in the footsteps of other eastern European countries – most recently Romania – which saw their governments collapse amid the economic downturn.
