According to Fruit-Inform, in 2011, Ukraine imported record-breaking volumes of oranges, mandarins and lemons. Ukrainian imports were 11% higher than in 2007 (the year of the previous record). A recovery of orange imports should especially be mentioned, as they have been stably stagnating over the past 3 years. The State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine is ready to lift its ban on imports of milk and dairy products from Belarus, if the Belarusian side provides the guarantee of its products’ antibiotics spot test. This was sated by first deputy chairman of the Veterinary Service of Ukraine Volodymyr Gorzheev on March 1. Simultaneously, the Ukrainian veterinary service does not exclude the possibility that its experts will inspect the system for monitoring the production of milk and dairy products in Belarus. March 1, 2012, Ukraine introduced a temporary ban on import of dairy and meat products from Belarus, as well as the animals susceptible to African swine fever (ASF), products and raw materials from them. According to the official report of the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine, "several violations of veterinary and sanitary requirements of Ukraine were revealed in February 2012 when exercising state veterinary and sanitary control of dairy products imported from Belarus to Ukraine." Ukraine's Agriculture Ministry expects the area sown to corn to increase to 4.5 million-5.0 million hectares this year from 3.6 million hectares in 2011, it said on Wednesday, making up for winter grain plantings lost to drought and cold weather."The total area sown to grains will be 15.8 million tonnes, roughly the same as in 2011," Leonid Sukhomlin, the head of the ministry's grains unit, told an industry conference.
