United Press International: Ukraine flu outbreak worries EU neighbors BRUSSELS, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- An explosive outbreak of influenza in Ukraine is worrying EU member nations that border it, observers say. Kyiv has issued a call for international help in obtaining anti-viral drugs, saying 71 people have died in the past week and another 240 people hospitalized in serious condition among more than 250, 000 reported cases of flu-like infection, the EUobserver reported Wednesday. China View: Flu death toll rises to 86 in Ukraine Ukraine's deadly flu outbreak widened, 86 people have died from flu and respiratory infections, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday. Some 478, 000 people were registered with national health authorities as suffering from the flu since mid-October, of whom 17 had confirmed cases of swine flu, Lyudmila Mukharska, Ukraine's deputy chief health officer, told a news conference in Kyiv. CIDRAP: WHO team arrives to assist with Ukraine flu probe The University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy writes:The World Health Organization (WHO) said its team arrived in the Ukraine last night and met with the country's health ministry today to discuss a dramatic spike in flulike illnesses and deaths, particularly in the western part of the country. The Ukrainian health ministry has recorded more than 250, 000 flulike illnesses, of which 235 patients needed treatment in intensive care units, the WHO said in a statement today. As of yesterday, 70 deaths had been reported. Read the story here.
