Kseniya Simonova’s sand artistry helps sick children In her home Crimean town of Yevpatoria, Kseniya Simonova is lovingly referred to as the “Lady of Sand.” This slender and shy 24-year-old performance artist earned the nickname after winning this year’s “Ukraine’s Got Talent” television show on June 26, a local equivalent of the British and U.S. talent shows. But since her victory, despite worldwide recognition and over 10 million hits on YouTube, Simonova has shunned the trappings of stardom for charity work and a quiet life with her family.

A goal five minutes from the end by Barcelona’s European footballer of the year Lionel Messi sent the Ukrainian champion crashing out of the Champions League with a 2-1 defeat on Dec.9. A draw would have been enough to secure third place in the group and a place in the second-tier Europa League, but defeat gave Dynamo last place and put it out of European competition altogether. Shakhtar Donetsk will be left flying the Ukrainian flag.

New Miss Ukraine Universe Kyiv hosted the final round of Miss Ukraine Universe 2010 beauty pegeant Dec. 5, which was somewhat marred by the performance of FEMEN, a provocative group of campaigners for women's rights (2,3). Several FEMEN activists performed a mock arrival to the competition of "beauties" wearing ribbons such as Miss Bed. The guards, prevented them from entering the Intercontinental Hotel, which hosted the event.
