Verkhovna Rada eases life for nation’s budding civil society After more than four years of public advocacy, Ukraine’s legislature on March 22 passed a landmark civil society bill that was hailed by the United Nations for eliminating many forms of discrimination, and for tearing down legislative and administrative barriers for registering a non-profit and broadening the scope, geographical reach, and type of activities they can conduct.

Yanukovych has been under fire for the criminal trials and convictions against his defeated rival in the 2010 presidential election, ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, and numerous Tymoshenko allies. Tymoshenko is serving a seven-year prison sentence for abuse of office in reaching a 2009 natural gas agreement with Russia while she served as prime minister.
