Kyiv Post News, Letters to the Editor

United Kingdom readers sound off on Kyiv Post ban in response to libel law Editor’s Note: On Dec. 14, in response to a libel lawsuit filed against the Kyiv Post in London, the newspaper blocked United Kingdom users from accessing its website because British courts have taken a wide interpretation of jurisdiction, allowing foreigners to bring lawsuits for anything on the Internet that is accessible to U.K. readers. The libel law is draconian in its restrictions on free speech. A movement is under way for change. More information can be found here.

USAID stands ready to help Ukraine improve its judiciary, rule of law Dear Editor,

I was disappointed to read the Kyiv Post’s Nov. 5 opinion piece “Rule of lawlessness prevails in this nation.” The piece seems to reflect a misunderstanding of the remarks made by U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John F. Tefft and the chief of party of the USAID Ukraine Rule of Law Project, David Vaughn, at the Oct. 26-27 USAID Ukraine Rule of Law conference.

Time to learn to be free Dear Editor:
I read with great interest the column about Slavic Ukrainian attitudes, independence and creativity (“Inside Out with Yuliya Popova: Slavic attitudes come to fore when mixing with foreigners”).

Journalists at one of nation’s last independent stations seeking help Editor’s Note: The following is a June 7 open letter from the staff of Channel 5, considered one of the last television stations to report the news independently and fairly, to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, appealing to the nation’s leader for help against what journalists say are attempts to force the station off the air. On June 8, a district administrative court in Kyiv stripped Channel 5 and TVi television channel of their broadcasting frequencies.

Bugayova got it wrong; sexism is alive, well Dear Editor,

In response to Nataliya Bugayova’s opinion piece (Kyiv Post, April 9: “Leave Azarov alone: Only sharpest sharks should be political leaders"), I’d like to underscore the irrationality of her position and distaste for anyone who spoke out against Prime Minister Mykola Avarov’s recent comments about women in politics.

Popova presented slanted view of Kyiv Lions Club Dear Editor,

Yuliya Popova’s column (Kyiv Post, Feb. 26, “Charity is great, but no need for go-go girls on the program”) regarding Burns Night (Feb. 20 charity event in Kyiv) is an extremely slanted version of events.

Americans of Ukrainian descent out of touch with politics, events in Kyiv Dear editor:

Despite superficial solidarity, a basic divergence exists between Ukraine and its diaspora in the United States. Much of it comes from differences in the attitudes towards Russia.
The diaspora does not deal with Russia (except in theory) or with its proxies inside the country. Ukraine does.
