Quote of the day
“English fans need to know that if they try to mess with Ukrainian women then we will try to mess with them. The sex industry exploits women who are so poor and often uneducated. That is why we are going to try to attack every match.”

The German national team is playing all of its 2012 European Football Championship group games in Ukraine - two in Lviv and one in Kharkiv. In these cities beyond the borders of the European Union, fans from both Eastern and Western Europe will meet, and the experience could be jarring for some. If all goes well on June 9, the flight from Düsseldorf will land at 5:05 p.m. in Lviv, Ukraine, a city known in German as Lemberg when it was part of the Habsburg Empire. The group will head directly for the bus without stopping at the baggage claim. These fans will be wearing everything they need for their short trip. The bus to the stadium travels across cobblestone streets from the imperial period. Farther outside the city, nine-story, Soviet-style buildings line the road. Finally the new arena appears, looking out of place, like some shimmering silver UFO on the side of the road. Read more here. Today at 09:35 |

Politics and profiteering could harm Ukraine's tourism efforts when it co-hosts next month's UEFA football championship with Poland. As they arrive at Kyiv airport, visitors can't help noticing that the place has been receiving some attention recently. But it is not so much the sleek marble halls and swanky shopping opportunities of the new international terminal building that catch the eye as the uniforms of the immigration staff. There has been a fashion makeover in Ukraine for those issuing border stamps, done to coincide with the country's co-hosting of the UEFA Euro 2012 football championship with Poland, a new look that involves skirts cut three inches above the knee, contour-hugging tops and high heels. It took five years to hunt him down, and about five hours to sentence him. But as of today, the federal government is done chasing Ukrainian nightclub owner Veniamin Gonikman, who was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in an operation that smuggled Eastern European women into the U.S. and forced them to work in local strip clubs. He is the ninth and last defendant to be convicted in the human trafficking case. Gonikman, who led the government on an international manhunt for years, only admitted to money laundering, and insisted there were no "vulnerable victims," that he was never on the run, and that he lived openly in Ukraine. He was pushing for a 10-month sentence. Read more here. Today at 08:33 |

The EU sees Yulia Tymoshenko as a victim of political justice in Ukraine. But EU parliamentarians fail to agree on how react. Should they boycott the European football championship? EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule painted a grim picture of the situation in Ukraine. "Politically motivated justice is a systemic problem in Ukraine," he said. The most prominent, but by far not the only victim of this problem is former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Tymoshenko is in prison for alleged abuse of power while in office. She went on hunger strike for some time in order to protest against poor conditions in prison. At the EU parliament in Strasbourg, her daughter Yevgenia was present on Tuesday when some MEPs rolled out a banner with a picture of Tymoshenko and the slogan "Freedom for Julia." Read more here.
