German doctors traveled to Ukraine on Friday to examine ailing ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko at the prison where she is being held, but a Ukrainian official said she will not be allowed to leave the country for medical treatment. The 51-year-old Tymoshenko is on a hunger strike to protest the prison’s alleged mistreatment of her as she serves a seven-year sentence on charges of abusing her powers when she was Ukraine’s prime minister. For Viktor Yanukovych it was supposed to be a moment of triumph. On 1 July Ukraine's president hosts the final of the Euro 2012 football championship in Kiev's impressively refurbished Olympic stadium. A special presidential "lodge" has been constructed for VIPs, with 54 seats reserved for European dignitaries and heads of state. The pitch is already perfect. All it lacks are the goalposts. Androulla Vassiliou, the commissioner responsible for sport, is adding her name to the list of those who have decided to boycott the European soccer championship Euro 2012 in Ukraine, citing concerns over the treatment of jailed ex-Premier Yulia Tymoshenko. “I have decided, in my capacity as the European commissioner responsible for sport, that it would not be appropriate under the current circumstances for me to attend any matches taking place in Ukraine,” Vassiliou said, on 4 May.
