You're reading: Boyko: Ukraine cannot cancel 2009 gas contracts unilaterally

Energy and Coal Industry Minister of Ukraine Yuriy Boyko has said that the gas agreements signed between the national joint-stock company Naftogaz Ukrainy and Russian gas giant Gazprom in January 2009 cannot be canceled unilaterally.

He said this while giving testimony in Pechersky District Court in Kyiv as a witness in the gas case opened against former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

According to him, the contracts provide only for a possibility of entering into negotiations to amend the documents.

Boyko also expressed the view that the terms of these contracts were very unfortunate for Naftogaz Ukrainy, as they left Ukraine no possibility for maneuvering if they wanted to amend the contracts.
