Ukrainian Justice Ministry has asked that it be granted powers to regulate the tariffs of public notaries.

The director of the notarial system, bankruptcy and central certifying agency of the Justice Ministry, Kateryna Chyzhmar, said in an interview with the Legal Bulletin of Ukraine newspaper that the department is drafting the necessary amendments to the law on the notarial system.

"The amendments to the legislation propose that public notaries take the fee set by the Justice Ministry for their notarial services," she said.

According to Chyzhmar, the cost of notarial services of state and private notaries might be equalized.

The official added that today the legislation does not envisage a maximum size of fee for notarial services: clients pay for services of private notaries upon agreement with the private notary, although fees are no lower than those of state notaries. Chyzhmar added that high cost of services of private notaries leads to large queues at state notarial offices.
