The State Food and Grain Corporation of Ukraine and the government of Jordan have agreed on forward supplies of Ukrainian grain.

The press service of the corporation reported on Dec. 15 that this agreement was reached during a visit of a Ukrainian delegation to Jordan on Dec. 12-14, 2011. The delegation included Head of the State Food and Grain Corporation of Ukraine Ihor Filipenko.

"We’re talking about supplies of a big batch of grain by the end of the 2011/2012 marketing year, which can satisfy needs of the country. Jordan produces 10,000 to 15,000 tonnes of wheat per year, which is only 5% of the country’s general needs," reads the corporation’s press release.

The Ukrainian delegation also met with Chairman of the Parliament of Jordan Abdul Karim Doghmi and officials of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan: Industry and Trade Minister Sami Qammuh and Agriculture Minister Ahmad al-Khattab.

The agriculture minister of Jordan said that his country is interested in buying wheat from southern regions of Ukraine that are adapted to a hot climate.

The sides also tackled the issue of increasing supplies of Ukrainian agricultural products, such as flour and mixed fodder.

On the results of the talks, a working group was formed at the Industry and Trade Ministry of Jordan to draft documents on Ukraine’s proposals for cooperation and their further submission to the country’s premier for consideration.

It is planned that after consideration of the proposals by the government, a delegation from Jordan will make a working visit to Ukraine to sign a contract on forward supplies of Ukrainian grain.

The press service of the corporation said that Jordan annually consumes about 730,000 tonnes of wheat and the same amount of barley.

According to the latest forecast of the International Grains Council, 1 million tonnes of wheat and 400,000 tonnes of barley will be imported to Jordan in the 2011/2012 marketing year (July-June).
