The tax police of Kyiv transferred to the national budget Hr 104 million from closed criminal cases on taxation in 2011.

The press service of the State Tax Service department in Kyiv reported on Feb. 15 referring to Kyiv’s Tax Police Chief Ihor Usyk that the sum of covered losses from closed criminal cases is three times higher than in 2010, and is the highest in the last five years.

According to the statement, Kyiv’s tax police completed investigations into 216 criminal cases, which is 10% more than in 2010.

Some 78% of the losses were covered voluntarily by individuals that had committed crimes in the sphere of taxation. The offender claimed the right envisaged by Part 4, Article 212 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, according to which a person guilty of tax evasion in especially big amounts will not be prosecuted if they fully repay the losses to the budget for which they are responsible.

"For instance, in Shevchenkivsky district of Kyiv offenders voluntarily paid Hr 4.6 million in taxes and the same amount of financial sanctions were not applied," the press service cited Usyk as saying.

The press service also said that in January 2012 a total of Hr 17.6 million was repaid, which is two times higher than over the same period last year.
