The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) is planning to transfer the Russian ruble to the first category of foreign currencies in 2012 and use it to form the country's reserves, NBU Governor Serhiy Arbuzov has said.

"We are working on this issue. This would be convenient for the banks that are now working with the ruble," he told reporters before a government meeting on Wednesday.

However, Arbuzov declined to name a concrete date when the status of the ruble as a currency will be raised, noting only that "we’re already working on this matter."

"We haven’t yet made any changes, but we’re planning to make them," he said.
