You're reading: Ukrainian railways transport over 9.5 million tons of grain over five months of 2012

Ukrainian railways from January 1 to May 30, 2012 handled 9.56 million tonnes of grain, in particular, 8.463 million tonnes of grain were exported.

According to the press service of State Railways Administration Ukrzaliznytsia, 1.097 million tonnes of grain were transported inside the country.

In particular, Donetsk Railways transported 343,200 tonnes of grain, Prydniprovska Railways 754,300 tonnes, Pivdenna Railways transported 3.191 million tonnes, Pivdenno-Zakhidna Railways – 2.504 million tonnes, Lviv Railways – 570,400 tonnes, and Odesa Railways – 2.196 million tonnes.

Ukrzaliznytsia noted that the railways mainly transported wheat, barley, maize, rapeseeds and sunflower seeds.

An average of 63.7 grain carriers are loaded every day since early January. The enterprise has a sufficient number of rolling stock to transport grains in full. In general Ukrzaliznytsia owns 11,500 wagons.

At the same time, according to the press service, one of the factors affecting the technological process is the malfunctioning of elevators on weekends and holidays. On these days the volume of loading is 50% of the loading on working days, which leads to the accumulation of cars at ports and approaches to them, their irrational downtime waiting for unloading and, consequently, a deficit of rolling stock.

"To optimize harvest transportation it is necessary to improve cooperation between the railways, cargo senders and receivers. The sooner the railways receive information on the cargos to be handled, the sooner they will be able to organize loading and transportation," the statement reads.
