You're reading: Trade Ministry again studying introduction of import duty on fuel

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine is studying the possibility of introducing an import duty on fuel to stimulate domestic production, Economic Development and Trade Minister Petro Poroshenko told reporters in Kyiv on Wednesday.

"While there observed a sharp decline in fuel prices on the world markets and there is no corresponding price adjustment on the domestic market, I am collecting arguments to protect our oil refineries, return to duties on finished fuel," he said.

At the same time, Poroshenko gave Russia as an example, where export duties on crude oil were introduced to load national oil refineries.

"Why don’t we take oil, which can be bought at a lower price, from differentiated sources, introduce duties and thus load up our refineries," he said.

As reported, the Interdepartmental Commission on International Trade in December 2011 ended a special investigation, which had been lasting for almost a year, into imports of certain fuel to the country regardless of the country of origin without taking special measures.
