Kharkiv International Airport is expecting to service about 25,000 additional passengers or 100-120 aircraft during the matches of the Euro 2012 European Football Championship.

According to the press service of DCH, through which New Systems AM manages the airport, it became possible thanks to the construction of a new runway 2.5 km long, which allows the airport to accept all medium-range aircraft, including Airbus A-320 and Boeing B-737 air planes.

In addition, both old and new runways will be used during Euro 2012.

As reported, with reference to the head of the airport commercial department, Vladyslav Ilyin, Kharkiv airport will accept an additional 24,000 passengers per day during the Euro 2012 finals.

"We are expecting about 12,000 passengers to come to every match and then depart. Thus, the extra passenger flow will be about 24,000 people per day on each match day," he told Interfax-Ukraine.

According to him, the peak loading, including about ten flights per hour, is expected three or four hours before the matches and an hour or two hours after their end.

He also said that, in accordance with the UEFA requirements, the airport’s excess capacity allows it to accept more flights.

"According to the UEFA requirements, the airport is ready to accept up to 30 flights per hour and serve up to 2,500 passengers per hour," he said.

According to him, during the final matches fans will fly by charter flights from Amsterdam (the Netherlands), Copenhagen (Denmark), Berlin, Cologne (Germany) and Lisbon (Portugal).
