Central bank: Number of loss-making banks in Ukraine increases to 65

The number of loss-making banks in Ukraine July through September 2009 grew to 65, one up from the 64 registered in the second quarter of 2009.

As the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) reported on its Web site, the overall net losses of the country's banking system January through September 2009 were UAH 20.944 billion, including UAH 6.623 billion in the third quarter (UAH 7.301 billion in the second quarter and UAH 7.02 billion in the first quarter).

As of October 1, 2009, Ukraine's largest banks accounted for 59% (UAH 12.355 billion) of the consolidated losses of the entire banking system, whereas in the first half of 2009 they accounted for 63.4% (UAH 9.079 billion).
