Inflation in Ukraine grew to 1.8% in January 2010, compared to 0.9% in December 2009, the State Statistics Committee reported on Feb. 8.

According to the committee, inflation was 2.9% in January 2009, while in the next months it didn't exceed 1.5%.

Over the past 12 months inflation was 11.1%, whereas in 2009 totaled 12.3%, the report reads.

Prices for foodstuffs and non-alcoholic beverages in January went up by 3.2%. The biggest price jumps were fore sugar, up 14.7% and vegetables, up 14.3%.

Tariffs for housing, water, electricity, gas and other forms of fuel increased by 0.4%. Prices for transport increase by 1.7% overall, which was largely the result of increasing fuel prices and costs for passenger transport.

The committee said that annual inflation (against January 2009) in January of this year slowed to 11.1% from 12.3% in December 2009.

It was earlier reported that inflation in Ukraine in 2009 slowed to 12.3% in comparison with 22.3% posted for 2008. The government forecasts this figure to slow further to 9.7% in 2010.
