You're reading: Economy ministry not expecting sanctions from WTO for restricting grain exports

The member countries of the World Trade Organization (WTO) will not apply sanctions against Ukraine for restricting grain exports, Deputy Economy Minister Valeriy Piatnytsky has forecast.

"Currently, I do not forecast any sanctions [from the WTO]," he said at a briefing in Kyiv on Friday.

Piatnytsky believes that the WTO will have no grounds to apply sanctions against Ukraine, because restrictions will be introduced for a certain period of time and will be aimed at increasing the country’s food security.

"If we introduce measures to overcome the crisis circumstances, it is obvious that this will not provoke sanctions from WTO member countries," said the deputy economy minister.

At the same time, he said he is not aware of any details of restrictions on grain exports that Ukraine is going to implement.

As reported, referring to President of the Ukrainian Grain Association Volodymyr Klymenko, currently the government is discussing the introduction of a quota of five million tonnes on wheat and barley exports.
