The net worth of Ukrainian banks in August 2010 shrank by 1.7%, to UAH 130.5 billion, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has reported on its official Web site.

"As of September 1, 2010 the banks’ net worth was UAH 130.5 billion, or 14.5% of the banks’ liabilities," a statement reads.

Since the start of the year, the banks’ net worth has grown by 3.4%, or UAH 4.3 billion.

According to the NBU, as of the start of autumn the banks’ total statutory capital exceeded their net worth. The banks’ total assets in August remained almost unchanged at about UAH 1.041 trillion.

Cash, banking metals and assets at the NBU accounted for 5% of the overall assets, credit operations for 70.3%, deposits in securities for 6.6%, and demand balance at accounts at other banks for 5.3%.

The banks’ liabilities in August 2010 fell by 0.3%, to UAH 771.6 billion. The funds of individuals as of the start of September were 32.3% of liabilities, deposits and credits of other banks 21%, and the funds of legal entities 16.9%.

The public’s funds included UAH 189.8 billion in fixed deposits (76.1% of the overall sum) and UAH 59.7 billion in call deposits.

As of September 1 this year, 176 banks had NBU banking licenses: 20 banks were open joint-stock companies, one bank was a closed joint-stock company, 154 banks were public joint-stock companies, and one bank was a limited liability company.
