Vilnius, Oct. 14 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine on Friday, Oct. 15, will start talks with Belarus on the issue of Ukrainian electricity supplies to Lithuania through Belarus, Fuel and Energy Minister of Ukraine Yuriy Boiko told journalists in Vilnius on Thursday.

"We will start talks with our Belarusian counterparts tomorrow to get permit for the transit [of electricity] to Lithuania," he said.

Boiko said that this would be profitable both for Ukraine, as the supplier of the electricity, and Lithuania, as Ukraine is ready to supply one-third of the country’s power needs. According to the minister, the supplies could be about 1.5 billion kWh.

During the visit of the official Ukrainian mission to Lithuania on Thursday, the sides discussed the participation of Ukrainian specialists in preparations and technical assistance in the preservation of the Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania, which was closed on January 1, 2010.

Boiko referred to Ukraine’s experience of participating in a similar decommissioning project at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
