Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said he hopes that Ukraine and Cyprus sign a double taxation avoidance agreement.

Azarov announced this at a meeting with President of the Cypriot House of Representatives Marios Garoyian, the press office of the Ukrainian government’s secretariat reported on Wednesday.

"We have held talks on the signing of a treaty for the avoidance of double taxation for many years. Ten years ago, when I served as chairman of the [State] Tax Administration, I began to deal with this matter. I think it’s time to put an end to this process and sign a respective agreement," he said.

Azarov thanked the Cypriot side for supporting the European integration aspirations of Ukraine.

"I think that Cyprus is interested in the introduction of the visa-free regime with Ukraine, as this will help increase the number of Ukrainian tourists," he said.

During the meeting, the sides also agreed to hold a joint Ukrainian-Cypriot business forum in Kyiv in the first quarter of 2011.
