Ukrainian sugar refineries produced 1.53 million tonnes of sugar from sugar beets as of Dec.14, 2010, which was 22.7% up on the same date of 2009, according to the Ukrtsukor sugar producers' association.

Sixty-nine refineries have already stopped processing sugar beets, four refineries are still in operation, according to Ukrtsukor.

Refineries received 13.25 million tonnes of newly harvested sugar beets and processed 12.98 million tonnes.

As was reported, Ukrtsukor projects output of sugar from sugar beets in Ukraine in the new processing season at 1.6 million tonnes, which is 27% up on last year.

Ukraine produced 1.264 million tonnes of beet sugar in 2009 against 1.574 million tonnes in 2008.

The capacity of Ukraine’s sugar market is estimated at 1.8-2 million tonnes per year.
